There is a very cool, interactive exhibit taking place right now at the London Science Museum. The “Me in 3D” project is a joint initiative between Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College Hospital and the UCL Eastman Dental Hospital and Institute that aims to create the largest database of 3D facial images by capturing 3D facial pictures from people all over the world. Despite the fact that lots of information is available regarding bone facial structure, very little is know about how skin and muscle contribute to the structure of your face. Information gathered from the 3D and Me project will be used by plastic surgeons to determing the best way for performing facial surgery in the future.
Visitors to the exhibit will have to fill out a consent form and then will have their picture taken simultaneously by 9 cameras and rendered into 100,000 thousand pixels.
(The videos below do not have any sound. Don’t bother adjusting your computer!)
The 3D image can then be manipulated and modified however you like. Visitors will receive a personal code for accessing and playing with their 3D image on the museum’s computers.
The exhibit runs until April 10, 2012. For more information visit www.mein3d.info.
